Rainforests in Sumatra added to UN's danger list

29 June 2011

The Gunung Leuser National Park, part of UNESCO's Tropical Rainforest of Sumatra World Heritage Site and a critical area of orangutan habitat, has been added to the U.N.'s "danger" list due to illegal logging, encroachment and road construction.

SOS has been supporting the restoration of damaged parts of the Leuser forests since 2005, and works with communities living near these areas to protect the ecosystems and unique biodiversity of Sumatra.
