Response to the Ongoing El Niño Wildfire Crisis in Indonesia

There is an alarming surge in forest and peatland fires across Indonesia, driven by current El Niño conditions. We can confirm that none of the programme areas or restoration sites where SOS and our local partners operate are currently affected by the wildfires.

Our field operations are based in North Sumatra, while the vast majority of fires and emergency rescues are concentrated in Kalimantan (Borneo). That being said, we are preparing our operational teams in readiness for El Niño conditions to come to Sumatra. Our focus is on assessing firefighting resources, training and equipment.

While our working areas remain safe, we are deeply concerned by the situation unfolding across affected regions of Indonesia. We stand in full solidarity with our colleagues and local community fire brigades who are battling fires on the ground.

The work being carried out to rescue trapped orangutans and other wildlife in extremely dangerous conditions deserves urgent global attention and support. This ongoing crisis reinforces why long-term landscape resilience is so vital.

We will continue to closely monitor climate conditions across our target landscapes in Sumatra while extending our thoughts, gratitude, and support to everyone working on the frontlines in Kalimantan, Borneo.
