Scientists unlock the mysteries of orangutan communication

With the help of AI, scientists have decoded orangutan long calls.

Earlier this year, scientists published new research which aimed to unravel the complexities of orangutan long calls. These loud, booming vocalisations are crucial for communication across vast distances in the dense rainforest.

The study used traditional audio visual techniques and advanced machine learning tools to analyse the vocal recordings of 13 individual Bornean orangutans. They discovered that long calls are more complex than previously thought.

Long calls consist of high, low and intermediate frequencies which create a continuous gradation of sound. These frequencies or “pulses” can be described as grumbles, roars and sighs. They can be combined in different sequences to add complexity.

This research shows how much we still have to learn about our wild cousins and how crucial it is that we continue to protect, connect and rewild their rainforest homes. 🌿🧡
