Our canopy bridges in West Toba help wildlife to cross over the Lagan-Pagindar road, which cuts through the forest landscape. The bridges – constructed in partnership with TaHuKah – maintain connectivity, ensuring healthy gene flow and boosting the long-term resilience of species.
Recently, the Provincial Public Works and Housing Agency (PUPR) of North Sumatra joined TaHuKah for a field visit to the Lagan-Pagindar canopy bridges. TaHuKah demonstrated how the canopy bridges can successfully mitigate forest fragmentation caused by road development.
During the visit, TaHuKah explained how the planning and construction of the bridges were carried out with careful consideration of the local ecological landscape – proving that modern development doesn’t have to come at the expense of local wildlife.
The Lagan–Pagindar canopy bridges allow primates to navigate their home range without ever touching the ground. They provide tree-dwelling species with a safe crossing and reduce the risk of human-wildlife conflict.
This collaboration shows that development and conservation can go hand in hand – ensuring forests remain connected and wildlife stays protected.
