2016 Highlights

As 2016 draws to a close, we are reflecting on everything we have achieved this year, and on the challenges that still face us in the year ahead.

We would like to take this opportunity to share some highlights, and to send heartfelt thanks to all of our supporters and partners. With you standing alongside us as we fight for Sumatran orangutans and their forests, we are creating a brighter future for this incredible species.

Here are some highlights of what we've achieved, together.

Challenges ahead in 2017

Thanks to your generous contributions, we have been able to support nine citizens from the province of Aceh to take the government to court over its failure to uphold the protection of the Leuser Ecosystem in the province’s land-use plans. The court case was rejected at the end of November, but we are committed to supporting our partners to appeal against this decision, and will bring you more news about the next steps in this ongoing battle.

New threats are also emerging in the form of energy projects. We are urgently working with our partners in Sumatra to stop the development of a geothermal energy plant in the heart of the Leuser Ecosystem. The proposed site of the project is inside the Gunung Leuser National Park (a World Heritage Site) and is considered to be a core conservation zone due to its exceptional biodiversity, including Sumatran orangutans, tigers, elephants and rhinos. We will continue to fight against this project in 2017.

Reasons for optimism

We are building ever stronger partnerships on the ground in Sumatra, working together with other organisations, amplifying our efforts and our voices to ensure a future for orangutans and their precious forests. We are proud to back the incredible teams on the frontline, the conservation champions who are behind the highlights that we shared above.

We truly believe that we are reaching a point where our united voices and united actions are strong enough to turn the tide for the wildlife, forests and communities of Sumatra.

Thank you for your role in helping to make this a reality.

With best wishes for the year ahead,

Helen Buckland

In order to continue to expand our field projects and campaigning efforts in 2017, to respond to emerging threats, as well as plan innovative programmes, we need your support. Please consider ending 2016 with a donation so that we can swing into action once again in the new year.

As always, thank you so much for your support.
