Earth Day 2021

Happy Earth Day 2021! This year’s theme is ‘Restore Our Earth’, because:

  • Restoring forests captures carbon from the atmosphere and contributes to the reduction of global warming
  • Forests provide habitat for animals such as orangutans, but are also vital to humans – trees regulate local temperatures and purify the air we breathe by absorbing toxic chemicals through their leaves
  • Done correctly, planting trees to restore forest can improve soil health, reduce erosion, drought and flooding, and help communities with their economic development

Across the Leuser Ecosystem in Sumatra, teams of people from OIC and Nature for Change are working to restore several thousand hectares of land. Along with members of the local community around each restoration site, they are making sure that future generations of orangutans and other wildlife have more forest to call home.

If you can, please donate today and keep the restoration teams out in the field, doing their vitally important work.

For people who understand how important the forest is, how important one tree is for our lives, working on restoration brings a lot of happiness. By working in restoration, I can do some good for this world – Rio Ardi, Restoration Manager.
